Electrician
Installing and repairing the wiring and equipment people depend on
What people in this work actually do
Read wiring diagrams, install and test circuits, fit and repair motors, panels, pumps and lighting, trace faults, and work to safety standards. Many electricians also quote for jobs and manage their own customers.
This may suit you if…
You enjoy finding out why something stopped working, you are careful, and you like finishing a job and seeing it work.
Electricity kills people who get careless, so safety discipline is not optional. Work can mean heights, heat, dust and awkward spaces. Self-employed income is irregular until you have regular customers.
We show these because nobody else will.
What people get wrong about this
That it is low-status work. A skilled, reliable electrician in a growing town is rarely short of work and often earns more than a graduate in an office job.
What this looks like in a smaller town
Every village needs pump, motor and household wiring repair. Many electricians build a steady living from a single block, and add solar installation as demand grows.
Ways into this work
There is almost always more than one route, and the cheapest is often perfectly respected.
